How do I get rid of the the dry skin on my face?
Roni2011 asked:
I have normally oily skin. But right around my cheek bones there are dry patches. This is really starting to become an issue because when I put on my makeup it looks like my skin is peeling because my skin is so dry around my cheek bones. Since my skin is oily I really can’t use moisteriser I am told it will make my skin even more oily. Is this true? If so what product can I use to make my skin softer around my cheek bones without making my skin more oily?

You may want to try treating the area with some natural homemade moisturizer for a period of time. You can find some recipe in

Roni, you have Normal to Oily/Combination based on your description. If you have dry patches, then apply moisturizer on those dry patches. Whatever you heard have misled to you think that you shouldn’t apply moisturizer at all because other areas around your face is oily. NOT TRUE. If you apply a moisturizer on the oily part of your face, then, sure, you can get more oily. Why? Because your moisturizer may contain oils and waxy substances that make oily skin oilier. That’s all. I made a similar answer elsewhere for very dry skin and I got best answer (check in source). I have another answer for oily/blemish-prone.
Here is my proposed skin care plan for your combination skin type.
Rule of thumb: stop using harsh soaps; avoid toners; avoid very hot or cold showers; moisturizer right after you shower to lock in that moisture
Overview: Cleanse (AM/PM) –> Exfoliate (AM or PM)–> Moisturize (PM)–> Sunscreen (AM)
– Cleanser –
Try Eucerin Sensitive Skin Hydrating Cleanser. It has no fragrance or colorant.
– Exfoliant –
Try Neutrogena Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment with 2% salicylic acid. This product does contain fragrance and coloring additives, but they are both at the bottom of the list. Salicylic acid is a wonderful ingredient for oily/acne-prone skin type because it is a triple threat; that is, it functions as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and an oil-soluble exfoliant. All three of these benefits help kill acne bacteria, soothe the skin, and exfoliating the pore lining to dislodge any clog to permit a better flow of oil. If you are allergic to aspirin, then you should avoid salicylic acid-based products. If you have sensitivity to salicylic acid, you probably want to stick with a physical scrub such as Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Scrub with polyethylene round beads as its gentle scrubbing agents. It is important to note that the efficacy of exfoliation of scrubs is not on par with chemical exfoliation. But before you go for the scrub, try ease up the application of chemical exfoliant if you have low tolerance for it at first. For example, try to apply it every other night, or every third night, or once a week and gradually increase application frequency. Or, you can apply the chemical exfoliant for 5 minutes and rinse it off; do this for a week and increase leave-on application as you achieve higher tolerance for the acid.
– Moisturizer –
Moisturizing is very important for skin. Dry skin has an impaired barrier that is depleted of the essential barrier components that keeps it hydrated. If you prefer a separate moisturizer, here are a few options that are great for the body and face. CeraVe Hydrating Lotion or Cream OR Eucerin Daily Replenishing Lotion is great. Both contain no fragrance of colorant. They contain substances such as glycerin, ceramides, petrolatum, cholesterol, plant sterols, oils, triglycerides, etc that function as either water-binding agents and/or skin identical ingredient to keep skin smooth, supple, and hydrated. If you have very dry patches, try Eucerin Aquapor Healing Ointment. It is best to apply moisturizer on damp skin (e.g., after you shower), to lock in that moisture.
– Sunscreen –
Sunscreen is a MUST for any skin type. Sun UV-rays IS detrimental to the health of your skin. UVB is the burning ray whereas UV-A is the aging ray. Here are a few options that are great for body and face. Options for synthetic sunscreen are Neutrogena Age Shield SPF 55 for Normal to Oily with contain no fragrance or colorant. If you have sensitivity to synthetic sunscreen agent, then a good option is Neutrogena Pure & Free Liquid Sunblock SPF 50 with no fragrance or colorant. The drawback with physical sunscreen agents is that they can leave a white cast on the skin, so you need to practice blending or apply makeup on top. Do not mix moisturizer with sunscreen because you will dilute the SPF, lowering the protection – that’s a no no. For synthetic sunscreen, apply sunscreen first, wait 10 minutes then moisturizer on dry areas. For physical sunscreen, moisturizer, wait 10 minutes, then sunscreen.
Result? Give these method at least a month. But you should see less dry skin within first few days.
If your dry skin becomes persist and non-responsive, you need to visit your local board-certified dermatologist for professional help.
Best wishes
